Caryophylloseptoria Verkley, Quaedvl. & Crous, Stud. Mycol. 75: 233 (2013).
Index Fungorum number: IF 804469; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08480, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 4 species with molecular data.
Pathogenic on host. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, epiphyllous or predominantly epiphyllous, globose to subglobose, or slightly depressed, with a central ostiolum; wall composed of textura angularis or globulosa-angularis. Conidiogenous cells hyaline, holoblastic, proliferating percurrently one to multiple times with indistinct annellations, or (in addition) proliferating sympodially. Conidia cylindrical, straight, curved or flexuous, multiseptate, not or somewhat constricted around the septa, hyaline, contents with several oil-droplets and granular material in each cell. Sexual morph: Unknown (Adapted from Verkley et al. 2013).
Type species: Caryophylloseptoria lychnidis (Desm.) Verkley, Quaedvl. & Crous
Notes: Caryophylloseptoria was introduced by Verkley et al. (2013) with C. lychnidis as type species. Caryophylloseptoria is characterized by epiphyllous or predominantly epiphyllous, globose to subglobose conidiomata, hyaline, holoblastic conidiogeneous cells, cylindrical, multiseptate, hyaline conidia. Caryophylloseptoria accommodate septoria-like species which infect hosts belonging to the Caryophyllaceae in Europe and the Republic of Korea (Verkley et al. 2013). Videira et al. (2017) accepted Caryophylloseptoria as a distinct and well-supported genus in Mycosphaerellaceae based on morphology and phylogeny.
