Hyphosoma Syd., Annls mycol. 22(3/6): 315 (1924).

Index Fungorum number: IF 8608; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06846, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: black, interwoven hyphae, forming a single uniform strand; hyphae of two types, moniliform, very long, more or less branched, strongly constricted at the septa, smooth, brown, bicellular rounded ends; other hyphae helminthosporium like, long, septate, little or slightly constricted at the septa, olivaceous to dark brown. Type species: Hyphosoma hypoxyloides Syd.

Notes: Hyphosoma is characterised by black, interwoven, hyphae, two types of hyphae, very long moniliform and secondly olivaceous to dark brown helminthosporium-like (Hughes 1970). Hughes (1970) reported that H. hypoxyloides is a nomen confusum (Art. 69) based on a collection from New Zealand. Hyphosoma is currently a distinct genus in Metacapnodiaceae but molecular data is needed to confirm this taxonomic placement.
