Vermiconidia

Vermiconidia Egidi & Onofri, in Crous et al., Fungal Systematics and Evolution 3: 131 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 829433; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06854, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Colonies growing slowly, dark in reverse, with regular margin. Conidiophores straight, terminating in conidial chains. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidia resulting from acropetal, holoblastic conidiogenesis, dark brown, growing meristematically, leading to spherical cells with thick walls, developing multiple longitudinal and oblique septa in a later stage (adapted from Egidi et al. 2014)

Type species: Vermiconidia foris Egidi & Onofri

Notes: Vermiconidia was invalidly introduced by Egidi and Onofri (2014) and validated in Crous et al. (2019). Vermiconidia is characterised by straight conidiophores, acropetal, holoblastic conidiogenesis and dark brown conidia. All members of Vermiconidia were isolated from rocks. Vermiconidia is a distinct and well-supported genus in Extremaceae. Molecular data available for Vermiconidia are ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB and RPB2.
