Extremus

Extremus Quaedvl. & Crous, in Crous et al., Fungal Systematics and Evolution 3: 127 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 829395; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06848, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Hyphomycetous, rock-inhabiting. Colonies with brown, branched, thick-walled, septate hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiogenous cells integrated in hyphal chains, brown, subcylindrical to ellipsoid, smooth to rough, proliferating sympodially. Conidia medium brown, smooth to rough, subcylindrical to ellipsoid, thick-walled, in chains, with or without darkened median septa, at times with oblique septa; hila not to slightly darkened (adapted from Quaedvlieg et al. 2014).

Type species: Extremus adstrictus Quaedvl. & Crous

Notes: Extremus accommodates taxa isolated from rocks. Currently, the morphology of Extremus is only known from culture and lacks a complete structure. Extremus is characterised by brown hyphae with disarticulating conidial chains and is slow growing. Crous et al. (2019) suggested that taxa in Extremus could be aerially dispersed. Extremus is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and the type genus of Extremaceae. Molecular markers available for Extremus are ITS, LSU, SSU, BTUB and RPB2.
