Mycelium colonizing root-associated soil and isolated on culture media from surface-sterilized roots of living plants. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Chlamydospores present, terminal or intercalary, solitary, in chains or forming clusters, variable in shape, 0–1-septate (adapted from Crous et al. 2021).

 

Type species: Extremopsis radicicola G. Delgado & Maciá-Vicente

 

Notes: Extremopsis is characterised by terminal or intercalary chlamydospores, which are solitary, in chains or forming clusters, variable in shape, 0–1-septate. Extremopsis forms a strongly monophyletic clade in Extremaceae sister to Extremus but with low statistical support. Molecular markers available for Extremopsis are ITS and LSU.
