Uwebraunia

Uwebraunia Crous & M.J. Wingf., Mycologia 88(3): 446 (1996).

Index Fungorum number: IF 27643; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06646, 6 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium internal and external, consisting of branched, septate, smooth, hyaline to olivaceous brown hyphae. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells smooth, light to medium brown, subcylindrical, or with subulate basal parts and subcylindrical upper parts, straight or geniculate-sinuous, monopodial, hologenous with up to 20 percurrent proliferations. Conidia terminal, solitary, pale olivaceous, smooth, obclavate with an obtuse apex and obconically truncate base, uniseptate, becoming prominently constricted at septa when mature, straight or curved, hila unthickened, not darkened or refractive. Conidia frequently producing secondary conidia via microcyclic conidiation in vitro (adapted from Crous and Wingfield 1996).

Type species: Uwebraunia juvenis Crous & M.J. Wingf.

Notes: Uwebraunia juvenis was incorrectly linked to ‘Mycosphaerellajuvenis (Crous et al. 2004b). Mycosphaerella juvenis was later shown to be a synonym of Teratosphaeria nubilosa, a major foliar pathogen of Eucalyptus (Crous 2009). Uwebraunia is characterised by anastomosing mycelium, micro- to semi-macronematous conidiophores, holoblastic conidiogenous cells, solitary, dry, acrogenous conidia. The asexual morph of Uwebraunia is characterised by ellipsoid to obclavate, uniseptate primary conidia and pyriform, aseptate secondary conidia (Li et al. 2012). Seifert et al. (2011) treated Uwebraunia as a synonym of Dissoconium. Uwebraunia resembles Dissoconium in producing simultaneous discharge of micro- and macroconidia, however, species of Uwebraunia are pathogenic, characterised by pyriform microconidia, that do not form sclerotia or yellow pigment in culture while species of Dissoconium are mycoparasites. Li et al. (2012) resurrected the generic name based on both morphological and phylogenetic evidence. Uwebraunia is a distinct and well-supported genus in Dissoconiaceae. Molecular markers available for Uwebraunia are LSU, SSU, ITS, RPB2.
