Stomiopeltis

Stomiopeltis Theiss., Brotéria, sér. bot. 12(1): 85 (1914).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5274; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05151, 43 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 4 species with molecular data.

Epiphytic on living leaves, visible as black dots. Hyphae superficial, brown, reticulate. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia hypophyllous, dense to subdense, flattened, circular, brown, with an irregular central ostiole. Upper wall brown, comprising meandrous, compact hyphae anastomosing at central ostiole, lacking a basal plate. Paraphyses filiform, dense. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to clavate. Ascospores overlapping, 2–3 seriate, cylindrical, uniseptate, slightly constricted at the septum or not, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Zeng et al. 2019).

Type species: Stomiopeltis aspersa (Berk.) Theiss.

Notes: Stomiopeltis is characterised by superficial, brown, reticulate hyphae, hypophyllous, dense to subdense thyriothecia, filiform, dense paraphyses, cylindrical to clavate asci and 2–3 seriate, cylindrical, uniseptate ascospores. Stomiopeltis resembles members of the subfamily Plochmopeltineae but differs in having paraphyses. Zeng et al. (2019) re-studied the holotype specimen of S. aspersa (K 164017) and accepted Stomiopeltis in Capnodiales based on the brown upper walls and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of LSU, SSU, 5.8S, TEF and RPB2 sequence data.
