Mycophycias
Mycophycias Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm., Syst. Ascom. 16(1-2): 2 (1998).
Index Fungorum number: IF 27838; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11415, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Associated with algae. Sexual morph: Mycelium diffused; fruits formed in the receptacles of the host-plant. Perithecia very minute, flask-shaped, black, scattered, immersed, ostiole small, not prominent. Asci few, oblong, often curved, apex thickened, 8-spored, paraphyses absent. Ascospores fusiform, 2-seriate, hyaline, uniseptate, not constricted. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Mycosphaerella ascophylli in Cotton 1909).
Type species: Mycophycias ascophylli (Cotton) Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm.
Notes: Mycophycias is characterised by diffused mycelium, flask-shaped, black perithecia, oblong 8-spored asci and fusiform, biseriate, hyaline, uniseptate ascospores. Mycophycias was previously accommodated in Verrucariales (Eurotiomycetes). Deckert and Garbary (2005) provided an account of the interactions among Ascophyllum nodosum (Phaeophyceae), Mycophycias ascophylli (Ascomycetes) and Elachista fucicola (Phaeophyceae). Toxopeus et al. (2011) provided a reclassification of Mycophycias ascophylli (Ascomycota) based on LSU DNA sequences and suggested the placement of Mycophycias in Capnodiales (Dothideomycetes). Mycophycias is currently placed in Capnodiales genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data from more taxa are needed to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of Mycophycias. Only LSU sequence data is available for Mycophycias ascophylli isolates in Genbank.
