Limaciniaseta D.R. Reynolds, Madroño 45(3): 250 (1998).
Index Fungorum number: IF 27922; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06948, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with unpublish molecular data.
Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Mycelium superficial on living plant surfaces. Hyphae branched, septate and darkly pigmented. Ascomata clustered or solitary, darkly pigmented, stipitate, globose and ostiolate. Several setae formed in the upper hemisphere of the ascomata. Multicellular hyaline periphysoids occur in the ascus locule originating from the inner surface at the apex of the ascal locule. Asci bitunicate, 8-spored, arranged in a basal hymenium. Ascospores brown, transversely septate at maturity. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Reynolds 1998).
Type species: Limaciniaseta californica D.R. Reynolds
Notes: Limaciniaseta is characterised by superficial mycelium, darkly pigmented stalked and setose ascomata, a centrum with periphysoids, 8-spored bitunicate asci that produce, brown transversely-septate ascospores. Limaciniaseta resembles Chaetocapnodium in having ascomatial setae surrounding an ostiole but differs in having clustered or solitary ascomata, and in the characters of the basal ascomata. DNA sequence data is needed to confirm the relationship between Chaetocapnodium and Limaciniaseta. A short SSU sequence data of L. californica is available in GenBank (2022) but is not enough to clarify its phylogenetic placement. Limaciniaseta is currently a distinct and well-supported genus in Capnodiaceae.
