Umthunziomyces

Umthunziomyces Crous & M.J. Wingf., in Crous et al., Persoonia 37: 315 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 819069; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06718, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata globose, solitary, dark brown to black, erumpent with central ostiole. Peridium comprising 2–4 layers of pale brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, or with a single supporting cell, in which case it can be branched below. Conidiogenous cells tightly aggregated, lining the inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, ampulliform, holoblastic. Conidia solitary, hyaline, smooth, prominently guttulate, thin-walled, narrowly long obclavate, 0–3-euseptate, apex subobtuse, base truncate (adapted from Crous et al. 2016).

Type species: Umthunziomyces hagahagensis Crous & M.J. Wingf.

Notes: Umthunziomyces resembles Septoria but is phylogenetically distinct. Umthunziomyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Planistromellaceae. Molecular markers available for Umthunziomyces are ITS and LSU.
