Neoscytalidium

Neoscytalidium Crous & Slippers, Stud. Mycol. 55: 244 (2006).

Index Fungorum number: IF 500868; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07628, 3 morphological species (Species fungorum 2021), 3 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidia occurring in arthric chains in aerial mycelium, powdery to the touch, disarticulating, cylindrical–truncate, oblong–obtuse to doliiform, dark brown, thick-walled, 0–2-septate (adapted from Crous et al. 2006).

Type species: Neoscytalidium dimidiatum (Penz.) Crous & Slippers

Notes: Neoscytalidium is characterised by conidia that become septate with a darker central cell. Species belonging to Neoscytalidium were previously introduced as Hendersonula toruloidea based on conidia that become septate with a darker central and formation of a Scytalidium-like synasexual morph (Crous et al. 2006). Crous et al. (2006) introduced Neoscytalidium and Madrida et al. (2009) provided important epitypification and synonymies. Neoscytalidium is a distinct and well-supported genus in Botryosphaeriaceae. Molecular markers available for Neoscytalidium are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB, Histone and TEF-1.
