Importance and distribution
There are 65 Karschia epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but many species have been transferred to other genera such as Amandinea, Arthonia, Buellia, Buelliella, Catinella, Colensoniella, Cycloschizon, Dermatella, Epilichen, Gibbera, Heterosphaeriopsis, Monerolechia, Poetschia, Polycoccum, Pseudodiscus, Rhizocarpon, Rhizodiscina, Rhizogene, Schrakia, Sclerococcum, Stratisporella and Tetramelas. Karschia comprises 24 species known on several host plants such as Acer sp. (Sapindaceae), Amelanchier alnifolia (Rosaceae), Betula sp. (Betulaceae), Cereus sp. (Cactaceae), Juniperus virginiana (Cupressaceae), Metrosideros tremuloides (Myrtaceae), Pinus echinata (Pinaceae), Quercus robur (Fagaceae), Vaccinium corymbosum (Ericaceae) and Populus trichocarpa (Salicaceae). Karschia is reported from Asia (China), Europe (Georgia, Portugal), North America (Canada, The United States) and South America (Chile, Argentina).
