Marthomamyces
Marthomamyces L.K. Mathew, Jac. Thomas & N.N. Nair, in Lini et al., Asian Journal of Mycology 4(2): 36 (2021).
Index Fungorum number: IF 558390; Facesoffungi number: FoF 09833, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Parasitic on leaves. Mycelium ectophytic, branching opposite at acute to wide angles, reticulate. Haustoria forming at the tip of the hyphal branches, reach the stomata, enlarge and divide, lack appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia oval, ellipsoidal, X or Y-shaped, elongated with radiating cells, astomatous, dehisce longitudinally at the center. Asci oval, octosporous, bitunicate. Ascospores brown, conglobate, uniseptate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Lini et al. 2021).
Type species: Marthomamyces vateriae (Hosag. & Kamar) L.K. Mathew, Jac. Thomas & N.N. Nair
Notes: Marthomamyces is characterised by ectophytic mycelium, presence of haustoria at the tip of the hyphal branches, oval, ellipsoidal, X or Y-shaped thyriothecia, oval, octosporous asci and brown, conglobate, uniseptate ascospores. Marthomamyces vateriae was previously known as Echidnodella vateriae but was not congeneric with the type species E. linearis. Marthomamyces was placed in Lembosiaceae based on the non-appressoriate mycelia with atypical haustoria adjoining the stomata and elongated thyriothecia with longitudinal dehiscence (Lini et al. 2021). Marthomamyces is a distinct genus in Lembosiaceae but molecular data is lacking. This generic placement is therefore inconclusive. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Marthomamyces.
