Lembosia

Lembosia Lév., Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 3 3: 58 (1845).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2724; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06736, 160 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.

Epiphytes on host surface. Superficial hyphae with lateral appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia solitary, scattered, superficial, oval, ellipsoidal, X- or Y-shaped, easily removed from the host surface, black, opening by a linear fissure, with basal peridium poorly developed. Upper wall comprising linear, dark cells, which are branched at the margin. Hamathecium comprising vertical asci inclined upwards, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci bitunicate, fissitunicate dehiscence not observed, subglobose to ovoid, apedicellate, apical region of asci usually with a thick opaque region, ocular chamber not observed, not staining blue in IKI. Ascospores overlapping, oblong to obvoid, hyaline to brown, uniseptate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2014).

Type species: Lembosia tenella Lév.

Notes: Lembosia can be distinguished from similar genera based on its oval, ellipsoidal, X- or Y-shaped thyriothecia and hyphae with lateral appressoria (Hosagoudar 2012). Lembosia was excluded from Asterinaceae based on these characters (Hosagoudar 2012). Hongsanan et al. (2014) considered the presence of appressoria more important in distinguishing between Asterina and Lembosia. Lembosia differs from Asterina in having elongate thyriothecia which dehisce to open by a longitudinal or X- or Y-shaped slit (Hosagoudar 1991). Lembosia can also be distinguished from Asterina based on DNA sequence data. Molecular markers available for Lembosia are ITS, LSU and SSU.
