Importance and distribution

Hemigrapha comprises commensalistic taxa that grow on the thallus of the cyanobacterial morph of lichens and have close biotrophic association with the cyanobacterial photobiont. Some species grows on foliicolous lichens but most fungal structure of the hosts is unaffected and they take least benefit from algal photosynthates in order to support their mycelial structures (Cáceres and Lücking 2000). Hemigrapha comprises nine species known on thallus of Sticta canariensis (Lobariaceae), Nephroma australe (Nephromataceae), Phylloporis phyllogena (Strigulaceae), thallus of Byssoloma minutissimum (Pilocarpaceae), Pseudocyphellaria argyracea (Lobariaceae) and Strigula maculata (Strigulaceae). Hemigrapha is reported from Central America (Costa Rica), Europe (United Kingdom), Oceania (New Zealand, Papua New Guinea), South America (Brazil) and The United States (Florida).
