Melanographa

Melanographa Müll. Arg., Flora, Regensburg 65: 515 (1882).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3068; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12634, 10 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Characterised by a lichenicolous life-style. Sexual morph: black, lirelliform, often branched, single or aggregated, ascomata; disk slit-like or distinctly exposed; a dark greenish brown to black, K+ greenish black exciple widely discontinuous under the hymenium; a thin, dark greenish, K+ bluish green epithecium; a hyaline, I– and K/I– hymenium; a hyaline to reddish brown, K– hypothecium; branched-anastomosed paraphyses, not or indistinctly enlarged at the apex; ellipsoid to clavate asci, with an apically thickened wall and a distinct ocular chamber, I–, K/I– or pale bluish; and shortly ellipsoid, uniseptate, hyaline ascospores becoming brownish at maturity. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Ertz & Diederich 2015).

Type species: Melanographa tribuloides (Tuck.) Müll. Arg.

Notes: Melanographa was introduced by Müller (1882) to accommodate species characterised by lirelliform ascomata and brown ascospores. Ertz and Diederich (2015) lectotypified Melanographa with M. tribuloides. Ertz and Diederich (2015) also lectotypified Mycomelaspilea with M. tribuloides and synonymized Mycomelaspilea under Melanographa. No phylogenetic study has been done on Melanographa. The species need to be re-collected and sequenced to clarify their taxonomic position.
