Inocyclus

Inocyclus Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(3/4): 211 (1915).

Index Fungorum number: IF 2491; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02315, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Parasitic on upper surface of living leaves. Sexual morph: Ascostromata solitary, scattered or gregarious, superficial, circular or ellipsoidal, flat, black, opening by radiating fissures to irregular slits, internal part of stromata thick and containing a single locule, with a thin light brown tissue under the loculate layer, reaching leaf surface, composed of dark brown cells of textura angularis; upper wall of ascostromata comprising dark brown tissue of cells of textura prismatica. Locules immersed under the upper wall of stromata. Hamathecium composed of hyaline, septate, filamentous pseudoparaphyses, extending above the asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, subglobose, obovoid, clavate cylindrical, with a short pedicellate, thick-walled, with rounded apex, smooth, with a large apical chamber. Ascospores irregularly arranged, initially hyaline and becoming pale brown to dark brown, ellipsoidal, apiospores, uniseptate, with larger upper cell and shorter lower cell, thin-walled, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: See notes (adapted from Theissen & Sydow 1915).

Type species: Inocyclus psychotriae (Syd. & P. Syd.) Theiss. & Syd.

Notes: Inocyclus is characterised by superficial, circular or ellipsoidal ascostromata, subglobose, obovoid, clavate cylindrical asci and pale brown to dark brown, ellipsoidal, apiosporous, uniseptate ascospores. Guatimosim et al. (2015) reported that Inocyclus is unique as the conidiomata are intermixed with the ascomata inhabiting the same stromata found in the colonies and hyaline, aseptate, fusiform to clavate conidia. Guatimosim et al. (2015) referred Inocyclus to Asterotexiales incertae sedis based on phylogenetic analysis of LSU sequence data. Liu et al. (2017) synonymized Asterotexales under Asterinales based on multi-gene analysis of LSU, SSU, TEF1 and RPB2. In the phylogenetic analysis of Dai et al. (2018), Inocyclus grouped in Asterinales close to Lembosia species and was referred to Asterinales genera incertae sedis as sequence data is lacking for the type species I. psychotriae. Molecular data is available for only one species I. angularis (ITS, LSU, TEF-1). The taxonomic placement of Inocyclus is uncertain and is currently in Asterinales genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
