Caudella

Caudella Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 14(1/2): 90 (1916).

Index Fungorum number: IF 852; Facesoffungi number: FoF 05211, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Superficial mycelium, septate, branched, hyphopodium. Thyriothecia truncate-scutate, inverted, radiate-woven or better made from curved meander-shaped hyphae, perfused through the center of the pore. Asci clavate-cylindrical, with no genuine paraphyses. Ascospores hyaline, bacilliform, caudate or rather ciliate. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sydow & sydow 1916).

Type species: Caudella oligotricha Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Caudella is characterised by septate, branched, hyphopodium mycelium, truncate-scutate, inverted thyriothecia, clavate-cylindrical asci and hyaline, bacilliform, caudate or rather ciliate ascospores. Ryan (1924) described C. psidii from leaves of Psidium guajava in Puerto Rico and Hosagoudar and Goos (1996) added C. gordoniae from leaves of Gordonia obtusa (Theaceae) in Tamil Nadu, India. Pereira and Filardi (2006) described C. bipolaris from the Brazilian Cerrado and the species differs from other members of Caudella in the length of its ascospores, presence of slight swellings on both ascospore poles and in its filiform, flexuous, bipolar, bifurcate appendages on both ascospore poles. The generic placement of Caudella is uncertain due to lack of molecular data and is currently placed in Asterinales genera incertae sedis. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Caudella.
