Trichopeltospora
Trichopeltospora Bat. & Cif., in Batista, Costa & Ciferri, Publicações Inst. Micol. Recife 90: 17 (1958) [1957].
Index Fungorum number: IF 5569; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06745, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Biotrophic on upper surface of leaves. Mycelium superficial, light brown, with lateral, alternate hyphopodia. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia circular, gregarious, superficial, carbonaceous, brown to black, basal layer poorly developed, rupturing into an irregular central pore at maturity; in section lenticular. Upper wall composed of radially arranged irregular cells. Peridium comprising a single stratum of black-brown cells of closely arranged textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising asci embedded in mucilage inclined towards the center, pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, saccate or globose, apedicellate, without a distinct ocular chamber, slightly bluing in IKI. Ascospores irregularly 3-4–seriate, ellipsoidal, hyaline, becoming brown at maturity, 2-celled, slightly constricted at the septum, appearing rough-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2011).
Type species: Trichopeltospora pipericola Bat., Cif. & C.A.A. Costa
Notes: Trichopeltospora is characterised by superficial, light brown mycelium, fissitunicate, saccate or globose asci and ellipsoidal, hyaline, two-celled ascospores. Wu et al. (2011) examined the holotype of T. pipericola and placed it in Asterinaceae based on morphology, especially thyriothecia lacking a distinct ostiole, upper wall of thyriothecia comprising radially arranged cells and presence of hyphopodia, and this was followed by Hyde et al. (2013). Trichopeltospora is currently a distinct genus in Asterinaceae but DNA sequence data is required to confirm this taxonomic placement.
