Platypeltella
Platypeltella Petr., in Sydow & Petrak, Annls mycol. 27(1/2): 62 (1929).
Index Fungorum number: IF 4178; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06741, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Biotrophic on the upper surface of leaves, superficial mycelium present, with lateral, capitate hyphopodia. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, flattened, coriaceous, opening by central cracked region or pore. Upper wall comprising rows of cells, radiating from the central opening to the periphery, basal layer poorly developed. Pseudoparaphyses not observed. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, clavate to cylindrical, apedicellate. Ascospores uniseriate, hyaline, usually 2-celled, apiosporous, the primary septum forming ¼ distance from the apex of the spore, ellipsoidal to elongate-ovoid, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2014).
Type species: Platypeltella smilacis Petr.
Notes: Platypeltella is characterised by superficial, flattened, coriaceous thyriothecia, clavate to cylindrical, apedicellate asci and hyaline, usually 2-celled, apiosporous, ellipsoidal to elongate-ovoid, smooth-walled ascospores. Farr and Pollack (1969) added a second species, P. angustispora. Farr (1982) suggested the placement of Platypeltella in Micropeltidaceae. Platypeltella resembles Paramicrothyrium in having cylindrical to clavate asci but Paramicrothyrium lacks hyphopodia while Platypeltella has capitate hyphopodia. Platypeltella also resembles Asterinella in Asterinaceae in having superficial hyphae with intercalary capitate hyphopodia but Asterinella has broadly cylindrical asci and two-celled ascospores constricted at the septum while Platypeltella has clavate asci and two-celled ascospores with the first septum formed ¼ distance from the apex of the spore. Hongsanan et al. (2014) observed the holotype specimen of Platypeltella smilacis (W257) and placed Platypeltella in Asterinaceae based on the superficial mycelium with hyphopodia. Molecular data is lacking for Platypeltella. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Platypeltella.
